BOONE—The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) at Appalachian State University has received a $500,000 gift, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Jerry Hutchens announced today. The donors, who wish to remain anonymous, are both alumni of the university. They want to highlight the Turchin Center’s accomplishments and enhance its mission, Hutchens said. The unrestricted gift is made in honor of Dr. Peter Petschauer, one of their professors, who recently retired from the Department of History, and also serves as the center’s advisory board chairman. The donors are considering options for naming a major space in the gallery to commemorate their gift, Hutchens said. “I am extremely grateful and humbled by this gift,” Petschauer said. “The funds are a tremendous boost to the Turchin Center in that this gift affirms all the previous gifts and allows us to enhance our already widely acclaimed programming. We are very thankful that these good friends have become reacquainted with the university, have seen the splendid progress made by the faculty, staff and administration here at Appalachian since they graduated and wish to recognize that.” The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is the largest visual arts center in the region. It is located on West King Street in the heart of downtown Boone. The TCVA is devoted specifically to exhibitions, education and outreach programs in the visual arts. Exhibits focus on a blend of new and historically important artwork, and feature works of nationally and internationally renowned artists, as well as many of the finest artists of the region. Recently expanded through the completion of a second wing, the spectacular gallery spaces, studios and outdoor sculpture gardens of this dramatic building provide a dynamic setting for the viewing and enjoyment of art. Students, community members, and visitors to the area find the TVCA a welcome gathering place devoted to teaching and exploring the visual arts. In addition to its galleries, the TCVA operates the Community Art School and its multitude of workshops, lectures and other programs. The TVCA also maintains a strong connection to the university’s academic departments including the Department of Art.
