Before 1880, crystal utensils were mostly used by royal families. The founders of many of today's top crystal makers used to serve royalty by designing and making crystal dishware. In 1880, the Curie brothers, Jacques and Pierre, predicted and then demonstrated the ability of crystal to generate electrical energy from mechanical stress, called piezoelectricity. The discovery impacted not only the future of crystal, but also the growth of the communications industry and even the development of technology. On Jan. 19, 1879, Time magazine published an article about the use of crystal in health therapy. At the same time, some interior designers started placing crystal in bedrooms and offices to alter the magnetic field. Beginning in the 1920s, artificial quartz slices were widely used to control the frequency of wireless waves. The natural vibrational frequency of the quartz can be made highly stable with the use of external circuitry and is used to control the operating frequencies of wireless transmitters and receivers. In 1979, Japan started to produce large quantities of synthetic amethyst crystals to satisfy the demand for the crystals in the production of jewelry and decorations. In 1980, DaEl Walker, director of the Crystal Awareness Institute, conducted an experiment to test the use of crystal in health therapy. After the test, 227 out of the 234 people tested said crystal removed pain from their body. In 1985, a study conducted by the University of California at Santa Cruz showed that water consumed by humans after being dipped in crystal for more than 45 minutes could expand the magnetic field emanating from the human body to a radius of 15 feet or more. In 1987, USA Today published an article pointing out that crystal had become one of the most popular decorations in offices and homes.
