Village Stationery actually started as a bookstore opened (to the best of our recollection) by Harriet Otis and Hortense Gerard Butt in October 1965. It was located in a long, narrow space next to the now-closed Krugs Men and Boys clothing store. Some stationery and Christmas albums were carried in a section of the store from the beginning. Crane® stationery was added a year or two later. They had a difficult time getting the right to carry Crane because at that time Matthews Bookstore, located in downtown Omaha, was the place to buy your Crane needs. It was approximately 1975 or 1976 that the bookstore moved to the southeast corner location. Again, stationery was a section of the bookstore Fred and Judy Gacek purchased Village Books and Stationery in 1977. In 1979 a needlepoint store next to the bookstore had closed, so they acquired that space. They cut an archway between the two areas and stationery became a separate entity with more room available for special-order catalogs. The stationery lines they carried were expanded enormously with the additional space.
