Library gets land 'gift' from council

Mayor Jack Tarr and the Town Council awarded the Island Library with a deed of gift during their regular meeting on Monday night. The property awarded to the library will be used to double its size, allowing for more books and also expanding other offerings, such as an island history room. A ground breaking for the expansion will take place in the fall of 2008. Accepting on behalf of the library was Board of Directors President Linda Ryan, who said that the library has currently raised over $200,000 for the expansion, which includes a $50,000 donation by a library foundation in Norfolk. "Our campaign is titled 'The Little Library That Could,'" said Ryan. "And with your help and the help of the entire Chincoteague community, we think we can do it." Currently the Island Library is home to about 7,000 books and a children's reading room in a very cramped space that was formerly an island barber shop. The addition to the library would double its size, and allow for more books, a larger children's reading room, a multipurpose room for public meetings, and an archives room for their new island history section. A kick-off campaign to help inform the public of exact changes to the Island Library will begin in April. Tarr said that in the future, he would like to put a budget item in the fiscal year 2008 for a one-time construction donation to the Island Library. "The town is very happy with your project," said Tarr.
