BOSTON -- Among the many reasons for the success of the Red Sox this year, it's been noted often by both coaches and players that the team's improved clubhouse chemistry has been one of the biggest improvements from last year's tough season. Wednesday afternoon's press conference for second baseman Dustin Pedroia's eight-year contract extension showcased a moment that put that chemistry on display. 

During the team's announcement of Pedroia's new deal, designated hitterDavid Ortiz walked behind the podium where general manager Ben Cherington, Pedroia and manager John Farrell sat to grab second base from the Fenway infield and present it to the Red Sox newly extended infielder. 

After Pedroia received the symbolic gift, the two embraced, drawing applause from Cherington and the crowd on hand. 

Pedroia and Ortiz have been teammates since Pedroia's rookie season in 2007, when the Red Sox won their seventh and most recent World Series title. 

Pedroia is fourth all-time in Red Sox history with 956 games played at second base. His new contract will cover him through the 2021 season.
